After a dip and a nap lulled by a soft breeze we started out on an exploratory mission. Isla Mujeres is small, only five miles long and half a mile wide, so it doesn't take long to drive all the way around the island. There aren't too many cars on the island but there are a fleet of red taxis which are pretty reasonably priced, a lot of people (locals and tourists) make their way around on golf carts (more on those later). On our first day we flagged down a cab and decided to take the driver up on the island tour, which cost $15 US.
The road runs around the coast and cuts across the middle of the island. The west side of the island is white sand beaches while the east side is rocky coral buffeted by the Gulf of Mexico. We had our driver drop us off in town where we walked around and grabbed a simple lunch of tacos and beer along the Avenue Hidalgo.
We arrived in the off season, partly to get a lower price on the hotel room but also to avoid high season crowds. In May the town is peaceful, the bars and restaurants seem to be resting after the crowds have receded. The shop keepers are a little over eager but not aggressive. Cars aren't allowed in the center of the town so strolling and soaking up the colors is a perfect way to kill a couple of hours.
